David Smith presents: Operation, start up, shut down and process control at Leeds University

Leeds University set up a short course within their Continuing Professional Development program which took place between 15th – 17th May 2019. This course was named the Fluid Bed Processing 3 day short course and consisted of:

  • Day 1 Fluidisation Basics
  • Day 2 Industry Case Studies
  • Day 3 New Development and Innovations

David was asked to present on day 2 of the short course. He presented:

Operations: Start up, Shut down and Process Control

  • Critical design elements for operability
  • Air distribution
  • Upper plenum design
  • Starting up an empty bed
  • Handling very cohesive feeds
  • How to deal with build up of non fluidised larger particles
  • Importance of visual observations
  • Process control
  • True life examples

DJS Process Consulting Ltd was formed by David J Smith Bsc; CEng; CSci; FIChemE. With a focus on formulated products, the companies mission is to help clients at all stages of the product development cycle from upstream innovation to delivering an efficient and profitable manufacturing process.

David is a chartered engineer and a fellow of the institution of chemical engineers with over 30 years experience in the process manufacturing industry. His career started at Proctor & Gamble where he was heavily involved in new process and product development, process design, commissioning, process optimisation and trouble shooting within a global environment as well as being named an inventor on 19 process patents.

David then moved in to consultancy where he actively supports new product innovations, pilot plant installations, patent preparation through to the management of projects relating to new, state of the art factories, currently in both China and America.
